Behind the Candelabra: Film Review

Supposedly Steven Soderbergh’s final bake of the cinematic cake, the director has bowed out with arguably the best film of the year. It is warm, daring, compassionate and honest. It asks serious questions of society while pocking fun at other elements of it. And it allows two great actors to flourish in characters that feel real yet entertaining.

Behind the Candelabra is more than flamboyance, love and glitter. While it portrays these admirably, as you would when delving into the vivid life of Liberace, it also studies the sadder, deeper tones of his time behind his grandiose pianos; his dazzling shows.

Goldfrapp release their stunningly beautiful new album ‘Tales Of Us’ through Mute on 9 September 2013. Their sixth album, ‘Tales Of Us’ is written and produced by band members Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory and was recorded at their studio in the English countryside.

A sumptuous body of work, ‘Tales Of Us’ has been two years in the crafting and is their most narrative, cinematic and intimate recording so far. Nothing in their accomplished back catalogue has hinted at the new lyrical breadth that the band have introduced to ‘Tales Of Us’. All the songs bar one are named in the first person with a cast list of evocative character sketches, the contrary love affairs, the suspense, hallucinations, fairy tales and modern folklores documented and the traces of redemption they find in song take the poetry of Goldfrapp’s delicately considered music somewhere brand new.

Looming large alongside notable contributions from Rihanna and Chris Brown veterans Warren Okay ‘Oak’ Felder and Andrew ‘Pop’ Wansell, not to mention Madonna’s hook-scientist of choice Jean-Baptiste Kouame, are four tracks recorded with RedOne (the all-conquering Swedish/Moroccan production house that gave the world Lady Gaga’s ‘Poker Face’, J-Lo’s ‘On The Floor’ and Nicki Minaj’s ‘Starships’ to name but three).

After Earth: Film Review

Either Will Smith’s son, Jaden, lacks any of his father’s talent; director M Night Shymalan has reached a new low in directorship; or Will Smith himself has crash landed from an inspiration to a non-entity. Or, all of the above.

After Earth, past the glimmer of past skill from Smith and a few etches of potential from his son – who in fairness showed signs that he can actually act to some extent – is dull. Its script is a feeble attempt at invigorating sci-fi adventure pace; its plot is a warbling mess that shows nothing of the mediocrity it could have brought.

But, good things come from it occasionally. And when they're ''good'', they're great.

Take Capital Cities for example; they're an electro-pop duo made up of two jingle writers meeting on Craigslist.

Gravity Guy 2: Game Review

Taking a different approach

The original Gravity Guy was mainly about defying gravity as you avoided wave after wave of obstacles whilst flipping up and down and even riding along ceilings. Gravity Guy 2 is quite simply not that game. You don’t flip, you don’t flop and you don’t run across ceilings. What is it is a pretty simple fun runner and jumper that can kill a few hours.

Taking a slightly different approach Gravity Guy 2 focuses on the controlling of platforms. Holding the screen raises a platform then you must let go in order to drop it. It’s the timing of your upward raising that propels you onto the next platform and it’s not such an easy manoeuvre to pull off. As there’s no button to actually jump it’s a tricky technique to master and for much of the game it’s a case of hoping you land where you want to.
