Young Rebel Set

Debut album ‘Curse Our Love’ out now on Big Flame

New single ‘Red Bricks’ confirmed for August 14th

Announce new live dates including Hop Farm festival, London Water Rats, Club NME and headline September tour

“A rousing patchwork of gritty urban folk” Word
“YRS are here to put the integrity back into an increasingly vapid musical landscape” The Fly
“A determination and dedication that’s hard to fault” Classic Rock

Following the release of their long awaited debut album ‘Curse Our Love’ earlier this month, Stockton seven-piece Young Rebel Set have announced their new single ‘Red Bricks’ will be released on August 14th through Big Flame alongside a headline UK tour in September.

Already becoming a favourite at their live shows, ‘Red Bricks’ is a bittersweet ballad that showcases the softer side of Young Rebel Set’s spectrum. Opening with Matty’s vocals “Lift your head up above and look around you / And try and see the beauty in what surrounds you / ‘Cause maybe your dreams are just not that far away / And who am I to be telling you to stay” nestled amongst delicate melodies, the song gradually builds up to a powerful crescendo of percussion and rousing chorus.

Young Rebel Set have been touring solidly over the past 18 months building a loyal fan base across the UK and Europe. They’ve recently returned from a sold out tour in Germany and have just been confirmed for Hop Farm Festival alongside a string of dates across the summer including Water Rats, Club NME and Bestival before commencing a full headline UK tour in September.

LEAD SINGLE “CRYSTALLINE” AVAILABLE TODAY EXCLUSIVELY ON iTUNES
BIOPHILIA APP SUITE FOR iPAD, iPHONE AND
iPOD TOUCH TO DEBUT IN JULY ON
ONE LITTLE INDIAN
WORLD PREMIERE OF BIOPHILIA BEGINS JUNE 30th WITH MULTIMEDIA LIVE RESIDENCY AT MANCHESTER INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL

Björk today announces Biophilia, her most ambitious and interdisciplinary project to date, with the release of lead single “Crystalline” exclusively on the iTunes Store worldwide (www.itunes.com). Biophilia is a multi-media project, comprising a studio album, apps, a new website, custom-made musical instruments, live shows and educational workshops.

Björk has collaborated with app developers, scientists, writers, inventors, musicians and instrument makers to create a unique multi-media exploration of the universe and its physical forces - particularly those where music, nature and technology meet. The project is inspired by and explores these relationships between musical structures and natural phenomena, from the atomic to the cosmic.

The album’s lead single “Crystalline” is available on iTunes now, with Biophilia Apps released through from One Little Indian.

The Biophilia live show will have its world premiere on June 30th as part of the Manchester International Festival. Björk will be in residence at the festival for a three-week run which includes six intimate performances of her new songs at Campfield Market Hall - her first UK dates in over three years. The residency will also introduce companion apps, invented instruments and more. For more information: http://mif.co.uk/event/bjork-biophilia/
Biophilia comprises five elements:
I. ALBUM:
The songs from Biophilia will be released as a traditional 10-track studio album later this year, available digitally and physically across standard formats. The songs will also be featured within their accompanying Biophilia Apps, but with a more stripped-down structure for educational and game purposes, mixed by Damian Taylor and Björk. The album’s first single, “Crystalline,” is available now. The groundbreaking director and longtime Björk collaborator Michel Gondry is creating a music video for the song.
II. APPS:
The Biophilia Apps are a collection of ten apps, one for each song, which will be available via the central Cosmogony “mother app,” available through One Little Indian. This platform will serve as a three-dimensional galaxy in which the initial apps appear as constellations, and the others are added to the collection at regular intervals thereafter.

Every app has its own theme (in connection with its corresponding song) and combines a natural element with a musicological feature. The layers of content in each app include: an interactive game based on the song’s scientific and musical subject matter, a musical animation of the song, an animated score, lyrics, and an academic essay. The game enables the user to interact with musical elements of the song and to learn about different musical features while creating their own version; the musical animation and animated music score bring together conventional and innovative ways of representing music visually; and the academic essay explores the ideas behind each song and app and how they are realized musically.

The Biophilia Apps have been developed with a team chosen by Björk, comprising ten of the most groundbreaking and commercially successful app developers working today. The team is lead by Scott Snibbe Studio, creator of the bestselling apps Gravilux and Bubble Harp, and includes the creator of Sim City, TouchPress (pioneering designers behind the two top grossing apps Elements and Solar System), and a host of award winning designers, animators and leading experts in coding and encryption.

III. LIVE SHOWS:
The Biophilia live show will have its world premiere on 30th June as part of the Manchester International Festival and continues as a three-year world tour of six-week residencies in eight different cities. In each city Björk will perform Biophilia twice a week, using the apps to play live a set of custom built musical instruments and evoking an atmosphere similar to being inside the app itself. For the rest of the week the venues will host a series of music-education workshops in collaboration with local schools.
Björk has commissioned a set of unique musical instruments to accompany her on the live tour. The team who created these instruments includes an English inventor, an Icelandic organ builder and a graduate of MIT Media Lab. Among these creations are four 10-foot pendulum-harps, in which the swinging motion plucks the strings and illustrates the songs’ gravitational subject matter. There is also a unique 10-foot pin barrel harp called the Sharpsichord, a midi-controlled pipe organ and celeste (re-fitted with bronze gamelan bars), twin musical tesla coils, a hang player and an award-winning 24-piece Icelandic female choir. The Biophilia Live Show takes place in specially chosen spaces and museums, rather than traditional music venues. Björk will perform in the round to audiences of less than 2,000 people to create an intimate experience in which all audience members are within 20-feet of the stage.
IV. DOCUMENTARY:
A 90-minute documentary on the Biophilia project is currently being filmed by Pulse Films. The film will be an exploration of Björk’s creative process as she puts together the different elements of the project. Here we will see her at work in the rehearsals for the live show, in the studio working on the album, and through observational footage, interview and demonstration we will discover how the project was conceived and realized. Along the way we will also discover more about the fascinating relationship between music and the natural world. The climax of this element of the film will be the unveiling of her project; the premiere live performance of Biophilia. The documentary will be broadcast later in the Biophilia campaign.
V. WEBSITE

www.bjork.com has been re-launched for Biophilia, using the very latest HTML5 technology. The site is now uniquely animated and interactive to provide an artist website experience totally unlike any other. It features a unique immersive 3D galaxy with versions that can be enjoyed on almost all devices, and will be the hub for all Biophilia information.

News/Mix: Von D - Daydreaming, forthcoming Boka Records 27th June

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

‘Daydreaming’ is the debut album release from Paris-based artist Von D on Boka Records. A fusion chef of bassweight, Von D has deftly sliced into unpredictable genres, concocting strange and beautiful new forms.

The album sees Von D collaborating with the internationally renowned Foreign Beggars, Phephe, David Boomah (vocalist for Shy FX Murderation) and Riya & Mr Lager, while his previous work has also been remixed by a host of respected dubstep DJ’s including Skream and Tes La Rok.

Born into the cultural melting pot of the Paris suburbs, Von D found his soul’s conduit in a beaten up old drum kit. Whilst the riddims of King Tubby alongside the foetal jungle of Photek and Serge Gainsborg were initial inspirations, after forging a successful path as a sound engineer Von D honed his sound sculpting skills to a razor sharp edge.

Von D’s productions have been picked up by Skream, arguably one of dubstep’s most successful artists, who snapped up a release for his label Disfigured Dubs. DJ Chef released Von D’s ‘Show Me’ on his Sub Freqimprint, which quickly became one of the most talked about releases of 2009 – so much so that three time DMC World Champion DJ Craze has been supporting the track in recent mixes.

Not one to be complacent, Von D’s kept up the pressure with releases on Black Acre, Tempa, Soul Jazz and Argon – enough to attract the attention of BBC Radio 1’s Gilles Peterson who has included a track for his hotly anticipated ‘Brownswood Bubblers’ compilation album.

Von D has created a global buzz with his numerous explosive live performances featuring unreleased and exciting material from himself as well as other established producers. Having had a host of successful tours in the United States, Europe and China, Von D has now set his sights on touring New Zealand and Australia.

Baby Monster reveal ‘Mr Success’

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Baby Monster is an electronic pop group comprised of Danny Sternbaum and Marty Larson Xu. The duo is pleased to announce details of their forthcoming self-titled debut album due out 27 June 2011. The pair will be giving away a free track each week in the lead up to the release via online media partners. The first track debuted on Big Stereo - the band’s recent singles label home. For the past 18 months, the band have been juggling laying down album tracks with opening shows for Klaxons, Miike Snow and Metric.
In true D.I.Y fashion, everything on the forthcoming album has been written, recorded, produced and mixed by the band themselves. Drawing from 80’s acts such as New Order, as well as 90’s shoegaze and brit pop bands, the record explores the concept of the past, present. and future all folding together into one moment. There is an underlying romanticism that soaks through the songs that is countered with an element of dark dreaminess; more upbeat tracks such as Charlie Sunrise and Mr Success sit comfortably next to low-fi gems such as Russian Lights and Kalookan Queen.

The band have remixed tracks from Gorillaz, Ellie Goulding, Zero7, Wolf Gang, Foster the People and Miami Horror. Previous singles came in the form of limited edition 7 inches ‘Ultraviolence + Beethoven’ on 50 Bones Records + ‘She Comes Alive’ on Big Stereo Records.

Tim and Jean ‘Like What’ album out June 27th

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

‘Like What’ is the debut album from Aussie youngsters Tim & Jean. It could also be the soundtrack to your summer, bursting as it is with sunny electropop gems about teenage life such as the forthcoming single ‘Come Around’, ‘I Can Show You’ and ‘Veronica’ to name a few.

Unusually for ones so young, Tim & Jean don’t listen to much contemporary music, instead citing the likes of Stevie Wonder, Tom Petty, and Fleetwood Mac as their musical heroes. They have even covered songs by the last two that can be seen on You Tube. Tim grew up in a very musical household and his formative years were steeped in jazz. At the tender age of 12 he played piano at a concert by the No.1 Australian jazz musician James Morrison., who has performed with such legends as Dizzee Gillespie, Ray Charles and BB King.

The duo, Tim Ayre and Jean-Christophe Capotorto met at the train station in Mandurah, a coastal town south of Perth in Western Australia, in 2008. They were aged just 17 and 14 respectively, and chatted music obsessively for a few hours, concluding that they would meet for a jamming session and see how it went.

The boys spent the next couple of days holed up in Jean’s bedroom studio and knocked out two songs, one of which was ‘Come Around’. They posted it on the Triple J Unearthed website and My Space; the responses immediately started flooding in, including several invites from US labels who flew them to the States to perform for them. At this point, Tim and Jean realised that perhaps it might be worth taking their collaboration vaguely seriously.

They reached the finals of Unearthed and that won them an invite to perform at the Parklife Festival. Since then they’ve been Triple J favourites, snapped up by Universal Records Australia, recorded their debut album in the bedroom studio, that was then mixed at the legendary Electric Ladyland Studios in New York by John O’Mahoney (who has worked with the likes of Coldplay, Metric and the Kaiser Chiefs), and toured constantly, including playing the festival circuit. They also supported the likes of La Roux, Franz Ferdinand, Two Door Cinema Club, Empire Of The Sun and Moby on their Australian tours. This included Moby’s show at the legendary Sydney Opera House.

‘I Can Show You’, the new single is out 4th July, and album ‘Like What’ 27th June.

Vondelpark announce new EP (R & S Records) // watch video

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

New video - CAMELS : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrCuRm-HqgU

Formed last spring after a trip to LA by Lewis Rainsbury, Alex Bailey and Matt Law, Vondelpark’s early work found release on the Sauna EP, a record that explored the emotional blankness of modern life - plane travel, jet lag, interaction and long distance relationships, yet crackling between Lewis’ haunted voice and haunting vocal samples, Sauna was a work of precocious emotional depth and density. Home recorded and lo-fi, it blended cut-and-paste sampled beats and longingly minimal guitar lines, yet the complexity of arrangements and layers of sounds were made to feel natural and simplistic.

Their second EP, nyc bags and nyc stuff, develops on the musical themes of Sauna. Still anchored by Lewis’ tender vocals it’s more abstractin its sampling andfeels more musically cohesive. Rather than dealing with the emotional alienation of modernity nyc bags instead feels deeply personal, an exploration of the internal rather than external.

Opening track ‘TV’ maybe best exemplifies their use of samples and the way they are built around original work, constructing stuttering melodic evocations that grow from a single repetitive loop to mingle with a sparkling guitar and implacable snatches of vocals. When the beats kick in over the refrain of ‘Colder, faster, TV’ it climaxes so subtly it could almost be missed. Second track ‘Feat B’ is the EP’s most straightforward, almost encroaching on r’n’b in its structure and influence, drawing on the genre’s sentimentality and slow jams and underpinned by a female vocal. Like much of the work on nyc bags the vocals are manipulated in a way that the original sense of what’s been used, sampled and recorded is deviated from to leave just its abstract imprint and after listening for long enough the distinction between original recording and sampling becomes blurred beyond recognition. Like ‘Feat B’, ‘Camels’ also takes something from r’n’b, but more conspicuously draws on the beats of the UK underground, it is instrumentally dense and vast, in which guitars and samples seem to entangle and intertwine with each other in expressive knots. ‘Hipbone’ mixes the plaintive overlapping vocals with hypnotic keys and mournful echoing horns, like all of Vondelpark’s music it is simplistic yet never simplified, whilst both touching and poignant. It’s left to ‘Outro For nyc’ to slowly bring us to the EP’s end, like a shadow of the whole work, or travelling back from a club at six am, with the echoes of that night’s music reverberating inside your head, the increasingly faint resonations of sub and treble that interplay with whatever your taxi driver is listening too as you glide under streetlights, only half-aware of where you’re going.

Introducing your new favourite local… The Shacklewell Arms.

Part of a creative hub in an exciting and upcoming area of Dalston, the historic free house has been taken over by a group of individuals including Dan Crouch (partner in 580/Field Day), the Pub on the Park/Camden Bars collective and Tom Baker (Eat Your Own Ears/Field Day/Underage Festival).

Built in the 1870s, The Shacklewell Arms has been well known for its colourful Caribbean and dancehall inspired décor. The new owners have kept the original features in all their quirky glory, with the only additions being a PA and lights in the back venue space.

With a venue capacity of 200, The Shacklewell Arms is already gaining a reputation for securing secret shows for high profile acts – most recently Chapel Club took to the stage and there are plenty more surprises to look forward to. Independent promoters Upset the Rhythm, Rockfeedback and Eat Your Own Ears are all lining up to put on gigs. Confirmed shows include Abe Vigoda, Keep Shelly in Athens, Cerebral Ballzy, Mazes, Maria & The Mirrors, GIVERS and Let’s Wrestle plus The Shacklewell Arms will play host to the official Field Day afterparty later this summer.

Homemade traditional pub rolls will also be served with a wider food menu to roll out over the summer.

Quite the rarity in the surrounding area, The Shacklewell Arms features a distinctive garden and courtyard imploring you to discover it and make it your favourite new local.

Beach Creep, The Shacklewell Arms in house weekly clubnight will be taking place every Friday and feature regular live appearances from cutting edge new talent alongside DJs spinning a mix of Beastie Boys, KLF, Mazes, TV on the Radio, Mayhem, Neu, Beirut, Odd Future, Pulp, TLC, Four Tet, Teen Girl Fantasy and Weezer.
