New Release: Steve McQueen by Mike Marlin, 12th March 2012 + UK Tour dates

Monday, February 27th, 2012

Mike Marlin
Steve McQueen
Label : Amp Music Productions
Single from Album ‘Man On The Ground’
Impact Date 12 March 2012

Mike Marlin ripped through 2011 being chosen as HMV ‘Next Big Thing’, releasing his debut album Nearly Man, touring the UK twice, singing disco with dwarves, smashing an office to pieces and vanishing for 3 months only to emerge triumphant with another 11 songs recorded in an undisclosed basement and mastered in Abbey Road.

Working with a new producer Catherine Marks (The Vaccines, Interpol, Foals and PJ Harvey) Steve McQueen was written during a session in Dublin with Eleanor McEvoy. Renowned for her virtuoso violin playing the plan was to lay strings over the new songs but Eleanor’s whirlwind of musical ideas and inappropriate stories led to this melancholy ode to the king of cool being committed to tape. Drawing early comparisons to Badly Drawn Boy and The National, the song pulls against the tempo, vocals stretch to breaking point and the instruments weave nostalgically around Mike’s baritone vocal

Steve McQueen is the third single to be taken from Marlin’s second studio album ‘Man On The Ground’. The single released with video directed by Eyes On The Wall Production is the winning entry of AMP Productions short film competition ran before Christmas as announced on 15th February 2012 at Marlin Underground, an evening of Music, Films and Pizza.

S. Carey Releases “Hoyas” EP On May 7 - Featured In New Bon Iver At AIR Studios Session

Monday, February 27th, 2012

Hoyas by S. Carey is a hospitable statement about love, longing and the celebration of knowing it well. You will find the familiar S. Carey modern classical repetition pushed into the vernacular of electronic music and beat-making. This is the warmest electronic music you’ll ever meet. The beats swing, stutter and pulse while each instrument retains a heightened awareness of its form and function within the larger family of voices.

Each song has its own personality, each part inseparable from the body, and while the results might be surprising to some, they shouldn’t be. S. Carey has historically illustrated a very rare breadth as an artist, not only as a member of Bon Iver, but on recordings of his own, whether from his debut full-length, All We Grow, performing cover songs, or in remix work. With Hoyas, Carey’s uncontainable talent is hard at work exhibiting some of the deeper colour palettes that music can offer. But most impressively, Carey’s talent can now be seen to be growing by leaps and bounds. His range as a singer is progressing into much bolder territories, as evidenced not only on Hoyas but on the Bon Iver at AIR Studios recordings where just his voice, Justin Vernon’s voice and two pianos mesh perfectly to create an unforgettable performance for the ages.

Hoyas started as a collaboration with a friend, Ben Lester, best known for his drumming and pedal steel work with A.A. Bondy. Carey and Lester bounced ideas back and forth a little over two years ago. They gradually came to four songs that had a life together. Recorded mostly in his attic studio with Lester, using a single laptop and not much else, Hoyas’ four songs exemplify home recording’s possibilities. Some sounds were composed by handcrafted instruments and others by junk. At times, Carey tracked vocals using nothing more than his laptop’s internal microphone, and most of the beats and synthesized sounds were sequenced and arranged using stock-software. Hoyas was then mixed and produced by the Grammy-award-winning team of Justin Vernon and Brian Joseph of Bon Iver, and mastered by Jeff Lipton at Peerless Studios in Boston.

Hoyas EP will be released May 7 on Jagjaguwar on CD/12″/Digital formats.

Pete Tong remixes EJ - Mama, I’m Gonna Sing

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

Having already seen a remix by London DJ, Jamie Jones earlier in the year it’s time for the legendary Pete Tong to approach the mixing desk for his own house-fuelled remix on EJ’s soulful track “Mama, I’m Gonna Sing”.  The debut track has already made it’s mark all over the internet amongst bloggers and tastemakers alike.

Pete Tong is renowned across the globe for his remarkable sets worldwide, most notably at the clubbing institution, Pacha in Ibiza.  Tong has taken EJ’s soul infused teaser track and has put his own minimal twist on it.  With a thumping bass from start to finish mixed with loops of EJ’s stunning vocals layered throughout this remix is going to be hitting every dancefloor from London to Ibiza in the coming months.

With the original track already being played like crazy on 1Xtra, Kiss and Radio 1 and a final remix in the pipeline from Savage Skulls there is plenty of hype around EJ already.  Expect ot be blown away from her future anthems ‘Bangers & Mash’ and ‘Supersize’ due later this year.
