H:II - Stephen Michael Apatow - Cancer Treatment Ends

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

In early August, Country Music Association Artist Stephen Michael Apatow [1] received the the devastating news, a differential diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil. According to the American Cancer Society, there are between 47,000 and 50,000 new cases of head and neck cancer each year. [2] The challenge encompassed a life transforming process of reflection and analysis, with engagement of medical experts across the globe, to help attack the problem with an objective for eradication of the disease and restoration of overall health.

As founder of the nonprofit organization Humanitarian Resource Institute and the United Nations Arts Initiative, Stephen’s role in humanitarian operations and policy development are embraced under his title of Director of Research and Development of the Humanitarian University Consortium Graduate Studies Center for Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Law. [3] In the fields of Sports Medicine & Exercise Physiology, he is best known for his work as Director of Research and Development of the Sports Medicine & Science Institute. [4]

The Neck Dissection

Following the differential diagnosis came an array of tests, biopsies and related diagnostics. The initial differential diagnosis and biopsy was made by tumor specialist, Dr. Ronald Hirokawa in Milford, Connecticut. Within one week, full body CAT and PET scans were scheduled, leading to a fast track appointment with Dr. Clarence Sasaki, Section Chief, Otolaryngology at Yale Medicine School and the Yale Cancer Center. That same morning, after a short review of the pathology results, a treatment course was outlined, accepted and facilitated the immediate engagement of his specialized medical team.

Following the morning appointment with Dr. Sasaki, the ENT Nurse Coordinator for the team walked us down to the Radiation Oncology department for a meeting/examination by Dr. Yung H. Son, Director of Therapeutic Radiology and Surgery (Otolaryngology), Chief , Section of Invasive Therapeutic Radiology. After examination of the tumor, Dr. Son outlined an action plan to utilize brachytherapy [5] or the placement of radioactive palladium seeds to facilitate eradication of the primary tumor. The procedure would be completed in conjunction with the deep neck dissection, removal of nodes and tissue samples associated with cervical spread, for pathology and staging of the cancer.

Dr. Son emphasized that the objective of the team was to incorporate the most effective treatment approaches, minimizing the use of chemotherapy and radiation treatment, to facilitate containment and eradication of the disease. He repeatedly emphasized the goal to minimize the potential damage that could result from over treatment, that reaches beyond the needs of the patient, potentially causing more destructive damage than the cancer itself.

On September 6th, surgery was scheduled, lymph nodes removed and brachytherapy initiated. Upon release from the hospital, the rehabilitation/treatment phase began, with a optimized nutrition, exercise and adjunctive therapies regimen [6, 7,8,9,10] from day one, with notes on the program recorded into the Never Give Up: Cancer Journal Log on Facebook. [11]

Chemotherapy/Radiation

Following the neck dissection and initiation of brachytherapy, came the next phase of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The member of the oncology team that directed this treatment was Dr. Hari Deshpondi, Associate Professor of Head and Neck Cancer, Sarcoma, Genitourinary specialization. The post surgery pathology results identified three nodes associated with spread, with extracapsular growth, a finding that warranted the addition of chemotherapy to the radiation treatment schedule.

As an music artist, composer, author and publisher, concerns were presented regarding potential neurological and auditory side effects associated with the use of the first line chemotherapy drug and appropriately targeted a less aggressive chemotherapy drug named Carboplatin. [12] Following initiation of chemotherapy, Stephen was able to remain minimally symptomatic (only minor post surgical challenges) for approximately 3 weeks. This state of health facilitated the capacity to record and produce the soundtrack “The American Way.” See: Top40 Charts - Nominate “The American Way” 2010 Country Music Song of the Year. [13]

Approximately 4 weeks into combined chemo/radiation, a significant inflammatory challenge occurred in the radiation treatment fields. This challenge was met with an immediate response by the Sasaki team to stabilize the condition, control inflammation and pain, allowing radiation treatments to progress through the last session that was completed on 23 November 2010. Progress during this time encompassed limited restoration of salivary gland function, taste and ability to transition from a liquid to a soft foods diet, with an overall discomfort level at 1-2 on a scale of 10.

In conjunction, with the Cancer treatment program at Yale, Stephen opened an international academic dialogue on the topic of “Tumor Infiltrating Lymphocyte Therapy” as a standard of care in conjunction with with advanced diagnostics and treatment. See: Top40 Charts - H-II: Stephen Michael Apatow Pushes New Standard Of Care For Cancer Treatment. [14]

On 18 November 2010, Stephen announced the formal release of the album “Country Goes Global,” through CD Baby for International Distribution. The project, four years in the development, that focuses on “Sharing a message of hope and inspiration with a world in need.” [15]

U.K. Progressive Fusion Artist Anders Helmerson

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

U.K. artist Anders Helmerson announced that his third and latest album, “Triple Ripple” is now available on the Musea Records Label. The album is being digitally distributed in over 20 countries at present, and will soon be available in CD format. Triple Ripple can be purchased through major online retailers, including iTunes and Amazon.com

“Triple Ripple” is a five track album that Helmerson proudly proclaims to be of the genre Progressive Fusion, one that he created himself. He stated, “It is of course a mixture of fusion and progressive rock. Fusion, in itself, is a style that mixes jazz and rock and started in the seventies, which is also around the time that Progressive music got its inception.”

Anders Helmerson’s new CD “Triple Ripple” is a Jazz Rock Fusion Tour de Force! The band features Marco Minnemann on drums, Bryan Beller on bass and Anders Helmerson on synthesizers. Marco is a master at driving the group and smoothly intricate interplay with Bryan Beller’s lyrical bass style. Helmerson leads an ensemble of virtuoso players who will amaze listeners with the power of superior technique, and great composing. With five tracks on the album (”Touchdown”, “Triple Ripple”, “Yodas Dance”, “Helix of Eternity” and “The Search Of F”), each one similar in style but definitively distinctive, there is no tempo that seems beyond the mastery of Helmerson and his crew. With the release of “Triple Ripple,” is appears that a new genre is born – Progressive Fusion, and it’s one you’ll definitely like.

Born in Sweden in May 1959, Anders Helmerson has had a life-long love affair with music. In the 1970’s, Helmerson played in various short-lived bands and studied classical music in Denmark and Sweden, all the while becoming more and more interested in synthesizers and progressive rock. Helmerson completed his debut album, “The End of Illusion,” in 1981. The album’s lack of success caused him to turn his back on music for the next several years. He worked as a surgeon in Copenhagen, a GP in Norway and a ship’s doctor on a cruise-ship, eventually discovering Rio de Janeiro, the catalyst for his return to music. In early 2002, Helmerson release his second album, “Fields Of Inertia” on the Brazilian label, Som Interior Productions.

MusicDish*China Sounds Pod8 - The Many Faces Of Chinese Indie Music

This edition of the MusicDish*China Sounds podcast, presented by Metal Postcard Records, features a motley selection of sounds from jazz (Joanna Dong) to indie rock (Pairs), traditional mongolian folk (Hanggai) and Shanghai’s club-thumping sounds (DJ Xuem).

My meeting with Joanna Dong was what you’d call a stroke of faith. It was during Music Matters 2010. Seeking refuge from the superficiality of Lan Kwai Fong, Talent Asia’s Spencer Douglass led me to one of Hong Kong’s coolest ‘hole-the-wall’ establishments called Yumla, playing some of the sweetest electro sounds - more on that encounter someday. Anyway, I find Adam Gerard - an organizer of major indie music event throughout Asia for Tiger Beer (here’s his article on brands and bands) - who introduced me to Joanna Dong as “the best jazz singer out of Singapore.” Like Singapore-based singer-songwriter Inch Chua, Joanna Dong has that level of talent to find acceptance amongst a global audience, as illustrated by her single “Originally Afro Blue”.

The pod continues with “Yangpu Qu” by emerging Shanghai duo Pairs - Xiao Zhong & F - who have been getting rave reviews of their live shows. Pairs has played at ‘Trash A Go-Go at Shanghai’s Yuyintang as well as The Underground at Hong Kong’s Rockschool.

When Beijing-based punk rocker Ilchi heard throat singing for the first time, he was determined to investigate his family’s Inner Mongolian heritage. He met two traditional musicians named Hugejiltu and Bagen, and soon Hanggai was born. Devoted to traditional Mongolian songs such as “Drinking Song” featured in this pod, Hanggai’s spacious, undeniably gorgeous music has won it many fans.

The pod closes with an electric minimix by French born DJ Xuem previewing some mixed tracks of the Logo Shanghai compilation, including artists such as Liman, Keewix & Nikkita, Leonard de Leonard and LowKey&Kardinal. DJ Xeum left for Shanghai in 2005 to perform at Luna (Xintiandi), playing drums and live electronic music with the band, Goldfishes. He has since performed alongside Shanghai’s prominent performers as Coco Zhao or Ben Huang (in venues such as JZ Club, CJW, Bar Rouge or Attica) for a variety of concerts, events in Shanghai and around PRC.

“Pretty-Damn-Cool” is a high energy video. A muted guitar gets the band rolling on this song, and the drums soon follow this 80’s style feel. The band all jumps in with a bass and guitar playing the same melody in tandem, utilizing a broken ascending diminished scale. Building up the energy for the vocals that follow the breakdown, Mister Jack comes in talking about a girl on his street that’s pretty sweet. The humor kicks in as he continues to describe her. He sings the hook with sing along overdubs, “I don’t know what it is about you”. After the hook, the band responds with the same unison pattern and Mister Jack continues to narrate more of the song. It’s fun, it’s funny, and it’s pretty damn cool.

Born in Hammersmith, West London, in 1986, the artist known as Mister Jack has garnished many accolades over the years for his brand of music which is an anthemic mix of what he calls “power pop, punk, rock, ska and a hint of British humor”. A self-taught guitarist by the age of 10, Mister Jack began writing guitar riffs while performing in U.K. punk rock bands from 2004-2006. He was honored with an exclusive feature in the Reggae section of Bebo.com, became the 18th most viewed musician on YouTube UK, and Garageband.com also awarded him numerous honors for his songs. He became the featured artist in August 2009 on Pax Stereo TV and his single “Pretty Damn Cool” on Arival Records had a total of 50,000 YouTube views. His latest single, pop reggae Christmas track “Santa Is Comin’,” will be released in time for the Holiday Season on December 13, 2010.

Rain Can’t Stop The Pet Conspiracy @ Hangzhou West Lake Music Festival

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

[Editor's note: This is the first post in a series that will follow one of the most exciting band's out of China, Pet Conspiracy. This multi-national quartet out of Beijing is in my opinion, the future of China's indie music scene and what will place it on the global map. But more about that later... on to Hangzhou]

By Pet Conspiracy

Oct 23, 2010, early morning: We (Drummer Edo and Singer Mary) had missed our a.m. flight from Beijing to Hangzhou. Although we were all supposed to be taking the same flight to the Hangzhou music festival to work on the sound check, only Joe and Fiona made it to the airport and stood waiting for the other two guys with their hot coffee. Our producer and guitar-player Huzi was already in Hangzhou, fancifully dreaming in the beautiful city, when he received a call from Mary that quickly changed his mood from that of peace and tranquility to rage! He wanted to kill them – missing the flight was a serious matter. So serious in fact, that later, Huzi decided to let them take the soonest flight available, which happened to be first class.

When Edo and Mary arrived at the venue, it was raining cats and dogs and we saw many colorful umbrellas and raincoats as we were walking down to the electronic stage. Beautiful rain yes, but at the same time, it occurred to us that if rainwater was dripping from the rooftop onto the stage, the stage itself would be drenched and anyone on the stage would be in danger of electrocution! As the booker of this music festival, Huzi was responsible for dealing with the issues regarding safety – which he did without too much of a problem. Never, in all their performances throughout China and Europe, had The Pet Conspiracy encountered such an enormous amount of rain as they did on that day.

Although we’d already taken the stage at 7:00 pm and had already started to play, a guy named Zhang Zhen, who had only 5 minutes ago set up all our instruments on the electronic stage, suddenly changed his mind and invited us to go and play on the main stage instead. Obligingly, we took our equipment and ran over to where we found nearly 10,000 people waiting! And, the rain was actually beginning to stop. We figured the sound system was bound to be incredibly great, so without any sound check, we began to play.

As soon as we started, however, it was as if a bomb had exploded. The entire audience began to dance crazily. Perhaps there had been a nice quiet folk singer on the stage just before; perhaps The Pet Conspiracy was so completely different that we totally recharged the atmosphere and the crowd couldn’t get enough. Watching the fans dancing in front of us as one huge chaotic wave, was messy but super nice! That was the third time we played Hangzhou West Lake music festival, being the only band ever to be invited back to play twice. If we are invited next year, we’ll definitely be back! We love the fans there, walking around in the muddy ground and drinking hot coffee, enjoying the music, the park, the gorgeous hills and the beautiful surroundings of Hangzhou west lake. We think the Hangzhou West Lake Music festival is one of the most professional festivals in China.

In conclusion? We hope next time it will be raining even harder, that we’ll get our audience even higher, and that Pet Conspiracy will be rocking heavier than ever!

[Editor's Apology: If you're wondering why the photos don't look like the Hangzhou music festival, stop scratching your head - they are not. They were actually taken at the Zippo party in Beijing by Ken Lee. We didn't have any pics from the festival and you caught me. Oh well, we do with what we have!]

Maclyn Lucille - Where You At

Monday, November 15th, 2010

The superb urban vibe of “Where You At?” kicks off with low strings and ad the DJ shouts out “Mac Lu, let’s go!.” This song from Maclyn Lucille is a song for all the ladies in the club who are looking for a good man. “Where You At?” is a pop/R&B groove featuring layers of vocals and harmonies that keep this song moving. With pulsing strings, bass and snare, and all that Dirty South flavor, even though this one is for the girls, the men will be on the dance floor as well. The vocal cuts when she sings “Oh Oh” add to the cut. “Everything from the jump is all true” brings in some big verb fingersnaps. Dj’s will love adding this mid tempo song to their club mix.

MarilynMusic Welcomes Fans To Their “House Of Love” Available On ITunes

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

MarilynMusic announced the release of their new R&B single “House Of Love” which is now available for purchase on iTunes. The track shows the continuing diversity of MarilynMusic’s compositions, cut from the cloth of classic R&B.

“House of Love” can be purchased on iTunes at: http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/house-of-love-single/id400292067.

Commenting on the new release, Michael Gaines of MarilynMusic said, “House of Love” is a song that we’re very proud of because of its positive message along with the pop infused soulful vibe of the track. We’re also thrilled to have worked with such a good singer as Jimmy Ramsay. He brought so much to the session in the way of vocal arranging ideas that the tune got even better. That’s really a fun part of this process.”

The verse to “House of Love” fondly brings to mind boy bands though the chorus quickly develops into a “Stevie” like R&B song. The guitar solo fills in with melodious runs of its own, while the rhythm guitar maintains a simple constant strum keeping the groove with the vocalist.

MarilynMusic is the partnership of musicians/composers Michael Gaines and Casey Conrad. Gaines and Conrad created MarilynMusic to combine their love and knowledge of a broad range of musical genres with the tastes of today’s pop audience. The prolific duo has numerous tracks recorded and produced, with new material constantly coming down the pipeline. Gaines and Conrad collaborate on every aspect of the music from the writing to the finished product.

MarilynMusic released their debut EP Pure Rock in May 2010 - a whirlwind tour through rock and roll history. Each song offers a different timbre and seems to draw influence from a different place. In September 2010, they also released the track “Black Wave Coming,” a heartfelt testament to the tragic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. With sounds ranging from the Beatles to Coldplay, all of these tracks are unique and definitely pure rock.
