In the songwriting tradition of Sylvio Rodriguez and Argentine legend Piero, Cuñao embarks on a short but delightful journey of timeless stories, rich imagery and colorful use of the Spanish language that bring to life the challenges of modernity from the perspective of a Latin American. Cuñao has always been a master of layering, creating dense aural landscapes that fluidly conjur imagery and take you through time; “Los Testigos” (translation: “The Witnesses”) is no exception. Rather it is the thickest and most nostalgic of Cuñao’s efforts, echoing through a countryside where the land has a face, ears and eyes, and bears witness.

Cuñao is the moniker for songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Julio C Montero, who is currently based in Los Angeles. Julio was born in Ecuador, but grew up on the multicultural streets of Queens, NY. This mixture of cultures heavily painted the musical world Cuñao would later come to explore. Cuñao’s songs are simple in form, mixing South American folk, 60-70’s romantic ballads, Tropical & cumbia, electronica, rock, 20th Century minimalism, and afrobeat as they paint a slightly different picture of what it is to be Latin American. In much the same way that Julio adapted to his new culture upon arriving in NYC, his songs transform and adapt when seasoned with other genres.

The song itself was inspired by and serves as a fitting ode to Pridemore’s relationship with many of his favorite area artists, including Thomas Patrick McGuire and River City Extension.

Pridemore explains “My songs are all, to some degree, about celebrating community. I’ve always found myself drawn to songwriters who are at each others’ shows, being a part of things. Thomas Patrick Maguire is exemplary in that regard. His small, melancholy songs belie his larger than life personality, boisterousness and enthusiasm in real life. TPM and I were fans of each other for a long time, before we even became friends.”

This relationship is much like that between Pridemore and Joe Michilini of River City Extension, so inviting him to collaborate on the track, and later appear in the video was a no brainer. The final pieces of Listening to TPM came together at the Stone Pony, where Pridemore had opened for RCE at the legendary Stone Pony in Asbury Park. “A mutual friend of mine and Joe’s turned to me and said”I think Joe was listening to a lot of your music, when he wrote this,” Pridemore explains. “I’d had the bare bones of what would become “Listening to TPM,” for a few months, but didn’t know how to finish it,” Pridemore returned home and hammered out Listening to TPM, “my version of “Friends and Family.” It’s all about community. We are all in this, together,” he explains.

Pridemore will be supporting Connecticut’s The Proud Flesh at their cd release on 4/28 at The Rockshop in Brooklyn, New York.

The popularity of the iPad within the music community has largely been attributed to the quality and variety of native applications designed to offer musician a new selection of creative and convenient ways to compose, perform, record, and learn.

Since launching in 2010, the iPad has been adopted by many professional musicians including world-class keyboardist, Jordan Rudess.

In an interview on MacLife about using iPad apps to create music, Jordan said:

“We live in an age when distortion is king. And while there are some purists who will always look for the highest-end solutions for making music, I’ve started breaking out my iPad in concert with Dream Theater, and no one has complained yet!”

Nashville based band Herrick is comprised of Donna Herrick (Mandolin/Lead vocals), Kerry Herrick (Bass/Vocals), Jeff Bradshaw (Drums/ Percussion), and Jefferson Rogers (Lead Guitar/ Lap Steel/Acoustic).

Originally formed in Spokane Washington, this four-piece act writes its own music, including the new single, “Do You Love Me.”

When Kerry and Donna wrote the song, they really intended to write unconstrained by “formulas”. “We tapped into our emotions and just let it ride…” says Donna. “We never write to a template or try and calculate how a tune might sell in some market. It just comes out of us naturally as we pull a song together. It’s very organic. “Do You Love Me” was written within the first hour,” she explains. “We weren’t thinking, ‘Let’s write a big hit single.’ It was more like, ‘Let’s geek out with some weird melodies and see what happens.’ I’m very glad we did.”

If “P.S. I Love You” - co-written and produced by Chris Seefried (Fitz and The Tantrums) - sounds reminiscent of Phil’s hit song, “To Know Him Is To Love Him,” it should. Rachelle always wanted to do a spin off of that song for Phil, as a way to pay homage to him, hence the idea and sonic inspiration for this song. “P.S. I Love You” will be included on Rachelle’s upcoming EP later this spring, along with 5 other new songs, each of which was mono recorded in Phil’s signature style. Rachelle is also working on a musical about the life of Phil Spector.

With the new movie Phil Spector, staring Al Pacino and directed by David Mamet, recently premiering on HBO, a lot of attention is obviously on the Spectors. Rachelle hopes that this new project will continue to alter people’s perceptions of her husband.
