iWantJam Artist Spotlight: The Andromeda Project

Thursday, November 15th, 2012

>With a newly released music video and more and more live shows to boast, Northern California group The Andromeda Project are a rising rock group with a growing presence in the Cali rock scene. Growing up in California, Michael Tiffany and Russ Torres - the members of the band who write the majority of the music - were both heavily influenced by the rock and pop circulating the air waves on Cali’s radio stations. However, their group contains members from a varied age group, which injects a dose of diversity into their musical sensibilities. Though Tiffany and Torres were the principle writers on the self-titled first album, they indicated that the sophomore effort “will be a more highly collaborated offering.”

Although the group started off as a studio band, “live performances are what we love to do” Tiffany told me enthusiastically in an interview. After a “rocky transition” from studio to stage, The Andromeda Project buckled down, practiced for months and months are came back with a live sound they were proud of, though they’re humble enough to say it’s an “ongoing effort.” In response to the question of what to expect at one of their shows, they say the live experience is quite faithful to the studio sounds, though some pieces were adapted for a “more dramatic effect.” Lovers of the album won’t be disappointed, it seems, but they also will come away with something fresh.

As The Andromeda Project continues to develop, they must try to keep their heads above the insane torrent of new bands and artists that seem to drown out many rock hopefuls. Torres seems confident that their passion will shine through, “and only the future will show how our love for music will materialize.” With the freedom to pursue their own vision without the constraints of marketing executives’ desires, The Andromeda Project aims to provide a rock experience that reflects their drive to express themselves and makes them stand out. It’s clear after talking to them that their motivated and doing what they can to leave a strong impression: “people want to see and hear and we want to deliver.”

Pop/Rock Trio Beyond The Sun Releases My Kind Of Crazy EP, Kick Off Tour

Friday, October 26th, 2012

This milestone will be celebrated by an official release party on Saturday, November 3 at The Mod Club, 722 College St. W, Toronto, ON from 7 – 10:30 p.m. as part of the Landmark Events Showcase. This special event is part of the band’s extensive 2012-2013 tour of Canada, U.S.A. and Europe.

“Colin Radu is an extraordinary up-and-coming singer/songwriter. With his band Beyond The Sun, Colin displays the soulful influences of singers, from Gavin DeGraw, to Ryan Tedder combined with the timelessness of Pat Monahan (Train). He and his band are a force to be reckoned with.”
Ken Tamplin, The Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy, Los Angeles, CA

“I’ve known Phil Radu for a couple of years, having had him as a student at Berklee in a few different classes. He’s always done really well. Recently I had the chance to listen to some of his band’s latest release. I knew it would be good, but I was still floored by the songs, production, talent and focus. He and his brothers seem to follow a very simple formula: Write great songs; play and sing them really well. Beyond The Sun is a winner in my opinion!”
Jon Finn, Professor, Berklee College of Music, Boston, MA

The fresh, energetic and heartfelt music of Beyond The Sun celebrates the Canadian band’s belief that lyrics and melodies can tell an on-going, universal story and help human beings connect powerfully through their many diverse experiences. Through catchy yet personal tunes that sparkle with infinite layers of harmony, guitarist Phil, lead vocalist Colin and drummer Dalton unleash tunes that resonate personally with their audiences. Growing up in an environment where creativity, the Arts and humor were equally supported, they immersed themselves in many styles of music, from pop, rock and folk, to rap and hip hop at an early age and found limitless ways to make music from their toys and other objects they discovered in the world. After forming Beyond The Sun, the trio immediately garnered the attention of audiences throughout its home country and elsewhere. Along with maintaining an ambitious schedule of live shows, each member continues to fine-tune his proficiency at his instrument, with two members formally studying at the prestigious Berklee College of Music.

Beyond The Sun has performed at many venues across the GTA including The Reverb, The Opera House, Healey’s, Edge 102 Studios and the Royal York Hotel. They have also played at various sports entertainment arenas including the Air Canada Centre, The Toronto Roadrunners Pre-Post game Festivities at the Ricoh Coliseum and seven seasons at the Rogers Centre with the Toronto Argonauts. The three have also played at notable festivals including Festival of the Islands, Burlington Sound of Music, CNE Rising Star and the Brantford and Oshawa Canada Day Festivals.
The ladies still scream for Elvis…but this time, in terror! Dead Elvis and His One Man Grave is a one-man band that combines the white jumpsuit iconic imagery of Elvis Presley with the caveman-stomp rock ‘n’ rock of Hasil Adkins. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hasil_Adkins

The last Dead Elvis show (also presented by Trash A Go-Go, November 20, 2010) is now legendary, akin to the classic Louisiana Hayride and “Aloha from Hawaii” performances of the (formerly) alive one. Dead E. decimated the audience, with few still standing by the end of his epic performance. Much of what went down is still hazy, lost in the mist of post-dramatic stress and Jack Daniels. There were tumbles to the ground; there was fire-water; various body-parts fell astray. In other words, it was a Trash A Go-Go performance of the lowest highest standards. And now baby, he’s back.

DJ B.O will be there, and everything you need to know about him can be surmised by the fact that he’s made actual Elvis pilgrimages, including viewings of the “maybe Elvis toenail” and the “Elvis wart” – 100% true.
Trash A Go-Go Presents: The Bait Ones “The Cramps Of Kobe”

Monday, November 14th, 2011

Date: Saturday, November 19th

Location: Yuyintang

Price: 40 RMB/30 RMB for students

Acts: The Bait Ones, The Macaronians, Banana Monkey, DJ B.O

Funky elbow grease! Finger polish moon beams of giggawat thing-a-bobs! My sensitive Shanghai skin is being exposed to the cool sea breeze of fall in Shanghai. What. Will. I. Do? Trash A Go-Go! Shanghai’s monthly tribute to vestiges and vintages of rock ‘n’ roll, that’s what. I’ll do like it should be done: twistin’, kickin’, livin’-livin’-livin’ all the way down!

This month’s Trash:

The Bait Ones from Kobe, Japan. Known as “The Cramps of Kobe,” The Bait Ones draw lots of inspiration from that seminal American psychobilly band. Formed in ’97, their shows are known to be very chaotic. In the words of Toshi from Trash A Go-Go, “Their gigs are very chaotic.” Chaos, I tell you! Run for your lives! Like The Cramps, the band features a married couple: scorching guitarist/singer Dai, and rumble lady drummer Miwa.

They are playing in support of their 3-way split album Demonic Freak Scene, which also features 2 other bands. Check it: http://www.timebomb.co.jp/label/va_demonic.html

The Macaronians, based in Shanghai. Featuring Toshi, former bassist of the Beat Bandits, the band is a party band that plays material influenced from 60s bands like ? & the Mysterians, Barry & The Remains, Eric Burdon & the Animals, and probably other bands with “&” in their names. Get ready to boogie down!

Banana Monkey, from Shanghai. Shanghai indie rock superstars Banana Monkey took a hiatus in 2009, inspiring many bands in Shanghai to try to take their crown. Han Han of Duck Fight Goose cited guitarist Misuzu’s influence, calling him a legend in the next breath. Now, they’re back. With a sheen pop/garage rock sound similar to Franz Ferdinand, the band is set to snatch back its crown.

DJ B.O, based in Shanghai. He spins rock music, mostly from artists people don’t care about, like Big Joe Turner, Paul Revere & The Raiders, and Katy Perry. He wants you to dance.

Trash A Go-Go is sponsored by People’s Bike (www.peoplesbike.com), MusicDish*China (http://china.musicdish.com), and your grandma’s veiny thighs.
