iWantJam Artist Spotlight: The Andromeda Project

Thursday, November 15th, 2012

>With a newly released music video and more and more live shows to boast, Northern California group The Andromeda Project are a rising rock group with a growing presence in the Cali rock scene. Growing up in California, Michael Tiffany and Russ Torres - the members of the band who write the majority of the music - were both heavily influenced by the rock and pop circulating the air waves on Cali’s radio stations. However, their group contains members from a varied age group, which injects a dose of diversity into their musical sensibilities. Though Tiffany and Torres were the principle writers on the self-titled first album, they indicated that the sophomore effort “will be a more highly collaborated offering.”

Although the group started off as a studio band, “live performances are what we love to do” Tiffany told me enthusiastically in an interview. After a “rocky transition” from studio to stage, The Andromeda Project buckled down, practiced for months and months are came back with a live sound they were proud of, though they’re humble enough to say it’s an “ongoing effort.” In response to the question of what to expect at one of their shows, they say the live experience is quite faithful to the studio sounds, though some pieces were adapted for a “more dramatic effect.” Lovers of the album won’t be disappointed, it seems, but they also will come away with something fresh.

As The Andromeda Project continues to develop, they must try to keep their heads above the insane torrent of new bands and artists that seem to drown out many rock hopefuls. Torres seems confident that their passion will shine through, “and only the future will show how our love for music will materialize.” With the freedom to pursue their own vision without the constraints of marketing executives’ desires, The Andromeda Project aims to provide a rock experience that reflects their drive to express themselves and makes them stand out. It’s clear after talking to them that their motivated and doing what they can to leave a strong impression: “people want to see and hear and we want to deliver.”

Pop/Rock Trio Beyond The Sun Releases My Kind Of Crazy EP, Kick Off Tour

Friday, October 26th, 2012

This milestone will be celebrated by an official release party on Saturday, November 3 at The Mod Club, 722 College St. W, Toronto, ON from 7 – 10:30 p.m. as part of the Landmark Events Showcase. This special event is part of the band’s extensive 2012-2013 tour of Canada, U.S.A. and Europe.

“Colin Radu is an extraordinary up-and-coming singer/songwriter. With his band Beyond The Sun, Colin displays the soulful influences of singers, from Gavin DeGraw, to Ryan Tedder combined with the timelessness of Pat Monahan (Train). He and his band are a force to be reckoned with.”
Ken Tamplin, The Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy, Los Angeles, CA

“I’ve known Phil Radu for a couple of years, having had him as a student at Berklee in a few different classes. He’s always done really well. Recently I had the chance to listen to some of his band’s latest release. I knew it would be good, but I was still floored by the songs, production, talent and focus. He and his brothers seem to follow a very simple formula: Write great songs; play and sing them really well. Beyond The Sun is a winner in my opinion!”
Jon Finn, Professor, Berklee College of Music, Boston, MA

The fresh, energetic and heartfelt music of Beyond The Sun celebrates the Canadian band’s belief that lyrics and melodies can tell an on-going, universal story and help human beings connect powerfully through their many diverse experiences. Through catchy yet personal tunes that sparkle with infinite layers of harmony, guitarist Phil, lead vocalist Colin and drummer Dalton unleash tunes that resonate personally with their audiences. Growing up in an environment where creativity, the Arts and humor were equally supported, they immersed themselves in many styles of music, from pop, rock and folk, to rap and hip hop at an early age and found limitless ways to make music from their toys and other objects they discovered in the world. After forming Beyond The Sun, the trio immediately garnered the attention of audiences throughout its home country and elsewhere. Along with maintaining an ambitious schedule of live shows, each member continues to fine-tune his proficiency at his instrument, with two members formally studying at the prestigious Berklee College of Music.

Beyond The Sun has performed at many venues across the GTA including The Reverb, The Opera House, Healey’s, Edge 102 Studios and the Royal York Hotel. They have also played at various sports entertainment arenas including the Air Canada Centre, The Toronto Roadrunners Pre-Post game Festivities at the Ricoh Coliseum and seven seasons at the Rogers Centre with the Toronto Argonauts. The three have also played at notable festivals including Festival of the Islands, Burlington Sound of Music, CNE Rising Star and the Brantford and Oshawa Canada Day Festivals.

Female Fronted Le Reverie Receive Reviews On Their Long-Awaited Debut CD!

Monday, October 8th, 2012

Critics are talking about Female-Fronted Goth Rock Metal Band Le Reverie and the release of their long awaited debut album, “Dark Symphony.” This 12-Song CD is an amazing combination of Symphony, Goth Rock, Metal and Progressive Rock. “Dark Symphony” will take you on an amazing journey - from the Symphonic “La Naissance;” and the dark heavy/progressive title track “Dark Symphony;” to the tender ballad “Ghost of You” and the haunting tribute to Edgar Allan Poe himself, “Raven”.

Le Reverie has been referred to as a combination of Dream Theater and Evanescence.

Dave Attrill from METALLIVILLE, UK’s Rock and Metal Webzine says

“Le Reverie are like a girl-fronted Dream Theater…they are impressive.”

Scott Thomas of Cashbox Magazine says: “Le Reverie is a band from LA. w/ angelic-vocalist Allie Jorgen at the helm. If you are into progressive metal bands to today’s dynamic bands ala Evanescence, then you have to look no further. Each song on this album, ‘EPIC’!!!” Are you ready to take a symphonic journey? If so, there is no looking back. This is a must have in your prog-metal music collection!”

Randy Patterson from Boomerocity.com Magazine says: “Dark Symphony is an incredible merging of Goth, Prog, and Metal with some very healthy doses of Symphonic bliss. Le Reverie will definitely continue on an upward trajectory that the band should be quite thrilled about. Dark Symphony the proggy/gothy title cut is rich in superbly crafted melodies and vocals. This number will get in your head and stay there for days.”

The first pressing of the album will also include a free DVD of their Gothic Video Single of the song “Hold Me Down” and will be a Limited Edition only.

Dean Brown Addresses Unfinished Business On New Recording, All-Star Cast Featured On Guitarist’s Fourth CD As A Leader

Friday, September 21st, 2012

On Unfinished Business, veteran guitarist Dean Brown, whose scintillating six-string work can be heard on over 200 recordings, steps out with his fourth dynamic outing as a leader. Joining him on this eclectic offering, which ranges from hard-hitting funk to lovely ballads, soothing samba flavored grooves, Latin-tinged jams, greasy organ-fueled blues and cool jazz, are longstanding colleagues Marvin “Smitty” Smith on drums and Gerry Etkins on keyboards. Their intuitive sense of simpatico blends nicely on this highly interactive session with bassists Hadrien Feraud, Jimmy Earl, Schuyler Deale and Rene Camacho, Hammond B-3 organist Bobby Sparks, percussionist Joey DeLeon, trumpeter Lee Thornburg, vibraphonist Bernard Maseli and tenor saxophonists Doug Webb and Kirk Whalum. Santana drummer Dennis Chambers, who played on Brown’s powerhouse trio recording from 2009, appears on one track.

Brown stretches with heroic abandon on this collection of old and new tunes from his catalog, showing the remarkable versatility, ingenuity and go-for-it intensity that has marked his 30-year career as a guitarist-composer-arranger and educator. An in-demand figure on the global fusion and contemporary jazz scene, Brown has toured and recorded with such luminaries as Marcus Miller, The Brecker Brothers, Billy Cobham, David Sanborn, Bob James, George Duke, Roberta Flack, Lenny White, Joe Zawinul and Steve Smith’s Vital Information, but takes the greatest pleasure in his own personal projects. The aptly-titled Unfinished Business, which includes some previously unrecorded tunes originally written by the guitarist during the mid ‘80s, follows his acclaimed solo outings Here (2001), Groove Warrior (2004) and DBIII: Live at the Cotton Club Tokyo (2009), the latter a stripped-down power trio outing with bassist Will Lee and drummer Dennis Chambers.

“The title of this album is multi-faceted for me,” says Brown. “There’s the idea of being a musician in general is kind of a work in progress and tends to involve ‘unfinished business’ in terms of always paying dues, always learning and hopefully always growing as an artist. There is also the idea that there are tunes laying around that don’t make the CDs, for whatever reason. I’ve written way more music than I have records for, so there’s always more tunes. Some of these tunes on Unfinished Business are ones that didn’t make it on previous albums, so I decided to record them now. I’ve been playing them live and people have been telling me, ‘Man, you should put that tune on a record.’ So I finally got around to doing it here.”

Brown is particularly pleased with the nature of the recording during these Unfinished Business sessions. “All these tunes were recorded live in the studio,” he says, “so there’s a lot of interaction and not a lot of overdubs. I’m trying to protect that kind of stuff. I just like the integrity of the idea that all the vertical stuff happens at once. I love that live feeling.” That kind of immediacy is felt on all nine tracks from Unfinished Business, which stands as Brown’s most ambitious release to date.

Reverse Order Receives Grammy Nomination

Friday, September 7th, 2012

First there was the buzz about their music video,“Sing For Me Baby” when it received more than a half million views in just a few days on YouTube, then their live appearance on NBC’s America’s Got Talent and now, their Grammy nomination for their single, “GO”.

“Go” is dynamic, sarcastic, fun and full of energy. It is nominated for the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. It is given for quality songs where singers and rappers collaborate. It just happens that the singer is John Russo and the rap is done by his brother Cruise Russo. The brothers are honored to receive the nomination that great artists like Justin Timberlake, Linkin Park and Usher have won.

The song comes from their newly released album, “Right Now”. “Right Now” is filled with catchy hooks and infectious melodies. Each song has its own uniqueness, while still coming together to give you a solid album you want to turn up and blast on volume 11.

Adding to Reverse Order’s line up is Andrew Katsock and Frank Spangler. Reverse Order may come from a small town in New Jersey but they’ve got a big sound and big dreams. Thursday, September 6th, 2012

Composers Concordance Records is proud to announce the release of two singles by Sound Liberation; an eclectic group that performs music encompassing a diverse range of musical genres. The two singles: ‘Breath’ and ‘Need’ feature the fabulous vocals of Chanda Rule. These songs are influenced by r&b, rock, chamber music, and hip-hop rhythms and incorporate the groups musical philosophy, developed by band founder Gene Pritsker, which is based upon “ending the segregation of sound vibration (i.e. musical Genres)”. “The freedom of sounds, as the name suggests, is truly implemented in a masterful way” - Jazzethic Magazine. The videos for these songs were created by Luma Launisch (Astrid Steiner & Florian Launisch).

1. Need

“Sound Liberation display a level of multi-instrumental virtuosity and imagination that makes middleweight prog acts seem positively pedestrian by comparison. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea for sure but for the open-minded muso, there’s weeks and weeks of musical nourishment to feast upon in these thirteen tracks.“ - Jodi Mullen, This is Not A Scene 2012

“..this is some startlingly original music. I am very encouraged when I hear music like this.”
- Gapplegate Guitar & Bass Blog writes in Nov. 2010

“The future belongs to Sound Liberation . . . even if takes a while to get there”

- Frank Bender- Ragazzi online magazine, March ‘09

“4 stars”  “unexpected twists and turns…The result my have you seeing visions…strainsof jazz, contemporary classical mu sic, minimalism, and even hip-hop and and African rhythms ”
- John Ephland, Downbeat, Nov. 2010

Sound Liberation, an eclectic chamber ensemble/band, was formed in 1996. The band has gained exposure in the New York city area and has generated a loyal core following playing such notable venues as Joe’s Pub, Wetlands, Knitting Factory, The Blue Note, Downtime, New Music Cafe, Cutting Room,, Le Poisson Rouge and many other performing spaces. The group performed at the Outreach Festival ‘06 and again in ‘07 in Schwaz, Austria. Also in ‘07 Sound Liberation performed at the Estonian House and presented Gene Pritsker’s Opera ‘Money’ at the Players Theatre and Flea Theatre in New York. In May of ‘08 ‘Money’ was performed at the Etna music Festival in Catania, Sicily and Sound Liberation played in Ragusa, Sicily. In July ‘08 they performed at the Blaine jazz Festival in Blaine, Wa. In May of ‘09 Sound Liberation presented 2 nights at the Flea theater, performing Gene Pritsker’s one hour VRE Suite written for the Sound Liberation Quintet and a concert with B3+ of music from their albums on Col-Legno records. In September 2011 they performed at the Bremen Musik Fest in Germany. In past years the group was part of the Peekaboo Festival of New Music and Theater and has toured Newfoundland, Canada in April of ‘99.

In August of ‘09 the Song No Truth, from the 2nd album, was featured in the Universal Home Videos motion picture ‘The Wedding Bothers’. In the fall of 2010 ‘Human Condition’ was featured on PBS’s Road Trip Nation series. The band played a very publicized concert at New York’s Le Poisson Rouge in January ‘10, the New Yorker wrote: “Pritsker, a rule-breaking composer-guitarist (and rapper) who impresses funk and rock beats onto classical structures, fronts this eclectic jazz-type combo of singers and instrumentalists”

The band has released their 2nd album ‘Open Up Your Ears and Get Some’ on Col Legno Records (www.col- legno.com) and had an album release concert at Drom in New York in November ‘08. New Music Connoisseur, wrote: “A glorious result it truly is….. This is the best Sound Liberation product so far”. “The freedom of sounds, as the name suggests, is truly implemented in a masterful way” wrote Jazzethic Magazine and Wildy’s World wrote this of the album “Sound Liberation create a recording as alive as creation itself… “. “Sound Liberation display a level of multi-instrumental virtuosity and imagination that makes middleweight prog acts seem positively pedestrian by comparison. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea for sure but for the open-minded muso, there’s weeks and weeks of musical nourishment to feast upon in these thirteen tracks.”
- Jodi Mullen, This is Not A Scene July, 2012

In July 2010 Innova Records released Gene Pritsker’s ‘VRE Suite’ written for the quintet portion of Sound Liberation.

“4 stars” “unexpected twists and turns…The result my have you seeing visions…strains of jazz, contemporary classical music, minimalism, and even hip-hop and and African rhythms ”

- John Ephland, Downbeat, Nov. 2010

“Barring the obvious exceptions, much of 21st century composition appears to be thinning in significance, but this might be about to change. Gene Pritsker is one of a very spare handful of composers effecting this change, and evidence of this is found in the Varieties of Religious Experiences Suite, a towering instrumental extraction from his opera of the same name.” - Raul d’Gama Rose, All About Jazz, June 2010

“Sound Liberation are afraid of nothing, mixing rhythm and genre to the point where the listener simply gives up on labels and enjoys the ride!….grab this indie gem now!” - RootdownFM.com

“VRE Suite is one of the more unusual works-performances I’ve heard in some time. It will no doubt appeal to those who look for rock that moves deeply into the “serious” music category. - Grego Applegate Edwards, Gapplegate Guitar & Bass Blog, Aug. 2010

Two release shows for the VRE Suite: At Cornelia Street Cafe, presented by 21st Century Schizoid and at DROM NYC

Ladino (Judeo-Spanish) Pop-Rock World Fusion

Thursday, August 30th, 2012

That’s right: Feminist rock in Ladino. The Judeo-Spanish language born in the Middle Ages is the perfect vehicle for articulating an utterly contemporary sensuality, defiance, wisdom, and love. It’s a living language, a lively tradition heard in a generation of new voices from New York to Jerusalem.

One voice leads them: American-born Ladino singer and songwriter Sarah Aroeste, who has spent a decade expanding the possibilities of contemporary Ladino song. The classically trained, pop-savvy vocalist channels generations of poets and wild women in slow-burning, passionately produced original works on Gracia (Aroeste Music; Release Date - May 22, 2012). Backed by flickers of flamenco and gorgeous pan-Mediterranean melodies, by lush strings and purring guitars, Aroeste’s airy, potent voice and intense engagement with her lyrics invigorate age-old wedding songs, hot love ballads, and tributes to history’s unsung heroines.

Gracia is Sarah Aroeste’s third album in Ladino, and includes many of her own original Ladino songs. In the title track (”Gracia”), Aroeste tells the neglected story of Dona Gracia Naci, a 15th-century Spanish answer to Harriet Tubman, who boldly saved Jewish families from the Inquisition and who epitomizes the strength and courage of our foremothers. In another song, Aroeste reimagines the wanderings of her Sephardic ancestors through the eyes of the traditional figure of the morena, the dark-eyed nomad girl, traveling for centuries and drained of her beauty by a harsh world (”Chika Morena”). Using a variety of eclectic source material throughout the album, Aroeste writes a song encouraging one to harness strength in the face of all odds (”El Leon Ferido”), which takes its inspiration from Samuel Ha-Nagid, an 11th Century Judeo-Spanish poet who was facing adversity in his own time. And yet another song is based on a contemporary feminist hip-hop poem, Wild Women, and calls out to the world to embrace women in all their wonderful complexity (”La Comida La Manana”). Complementing these songs are others of universal themes such as family, marriage, loss, facing demons, holding on to hope and more.

Produced with Shai Bachar (Ishtar Alabina, Omar Faruk Tekbilek, Sheila Jordan), and recorded in NY and Tel Aviv, the 11 songs on Gracia (both the original ones and a few radically reinterpreted classic Ladino folksongs as well), are a mix of feminist, experimental, raw, rock-beat, energetic, empowering, electronic, retro-chic, Mediterranean-infused and fine-crafted, detailed sounds. In addition to a 16-piece string ensemble highlighted on many of the tracks, there are also special guest voices and featured artists including Vanessa Hidary (the Hebrew Mamita), Amos Hoffman (Avishai Cohen band), Roni Ivrin and Mark Kakon (Idan Raichel Band), Nir Graf (Noa, Rita, Shalom Hanoch), Oz Noy (Cyndi Lauper, Phoebe Snow, Bill Evans), Samuel Torres (Lila Downs, Arturo Sandoval) and many more.

Altogether, Gracia is Aroeste’s most daring album yet and brings Ladino music one more step forward from the past into today. Determined to prove that Ladino is not a dead language, Aroeste shows through Gracia that Ladino is, indeed, very much still alive.
